The Shield

$1,800.00

Ring: responsibly sourced sterling silver, titanium, cultured freshwater pearl.

The Shield is a ring that makes use of jewellery’s ability to negotiate meaning, record history, offer protection, and act as a mediator. The silver which constitutes this ring has long had associations with protective magic, sometimes called Baraka in cultures from North Africa. Further protection is offered by the use of titanium, which is a very hard yet light material often used in the aerospace industry. Finally, while physical, spiritual, and psychological protection is invested in this ring through metals, a more nurturing protection is given through the pearl with its associations with femininity, nature, and delicate beauty.

This piece was selected for artisan Collects (2022), a collaborative initiative between Malki Studio and artisan Gallery that invited collectors to explore jewellery as an art form. For more information, please click here. It was also featured in the prestigious 2023 Mayo Festival at St Margaret’s Anglican Girls’ School, Brisbane — an invitation-only showcase honouring alumna Daphne Mayo (1895–1982), the pioneering Australian sculptor whose work, including the monumental Brisbane City Hall tympanum, helped usher Australian public art into the modern era.

The Shield was also exhibited as part of the Intimate Worlds exhibition at NorthSite Contemporary Arts in Cairns. Occurring between August and October in 2024, the exhibition “is about celebrating materiality and process. The artists featured in ‘Intimate Worlds’ have a profound respect for their materials, and their work reflects a deep curiosity and dedication to their craft.”

Dimensions: 2.9cm x 4.4cm x 1.7cm.
